I guess that is okay on a chilly fall day, but as the days get colder and the snow starts falling, it has been a real struggle to keep our childrens’ hands warm at times.

The mittens that they have accepted the most are mittens that are really simple, like these mittens below.

If you, just like us, have a toddler who doesn’t like to wear mittens, mittens with a theme could be something to try. If your toddler is interested in something specific, mittens with that theme can maybe make them wear mittens.

Our daughters have both of them went through a Frozen face and during that phase everything Frozen-themed was very popular.

Animal Mittens Knitting Pattern

Another way to make your toddler wear mittens could be through making them look like an animal. When our oldest daughter came out of the frozen phase, she used these hedgehog mittens a lot.

I actually ended up knitting them in a bigger size as well when she grew out of them, just because she liked them so much.

Mittens For Toddlers – FREE Knitting Patterns

All three of these mittens are quite similar in the way they are knitted. To make the mittens stay on, it’s good to have about4 or 5 cm of an elastic ribbed pattern by the wrist.

Sometimes I use double knit and double purls, and sometimes single knit and single purl. It depends on what kind of design you like for the mittens that you knit.

Apart from that, I also have realized, that the softer the yarn, the more toddlers seem to like the mittens. This differs a lot from toddler to toddler of course, but especially one of our children really can’t stand if yarn is itchy at all.

What kind of yarn you choose for the mittens you knit is of course, up to you. I usually go for a soft merino wool, or if I want a more economic option, there are many acrylic yarns that are soft also.

During the last few years, I have understood more and more how important it is that we know who God is. I have understood that there is a difference between knowing things about God and really getting to know him in a personal way.

I have understood that it is impossible to trust God if we don’t really believe that God is who he says he is.

Our relationship with God is not that different from any other relationship. When we meet a new person it is hard for us to really trust them. It doesn’t matter how much they tell us about how skilled and kind they are, if we haven’t seen it in them and know their character, we don’t trust them.

In order for us to start trusting someone, we need to spend time with them and see their character.

Same thing works with God. We can know a lot of things about God without really knowing him and trusting his character.

Remembering Who God Is

There is this video on YouTube by Priscilla Shirer that so well covers a lot about who God is. Every time I feel I need a reminder about who God is, I watch that video. I will leave it linked here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=At6pFpb46SI

Knowing our Father makes us understand who we are. Sometimes we are so busy trying to find out who we are and we forget to ask our Father who he made us to be.

God was the one that created us, we exist because he has a plan for us. God is not confused, he knows the plans he has for you. He knows why he made you and he knows his purposes for you.

Bible Verses About Who God Is

In the Bible we can read about who God is, we can get to know his character and how he sees us.

So let’s take a look on some of the passages of the Bible that describes who God is.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

Genesis 1:1

God is the creator of the universe. God is the creator of everything. Like an artist making a painting puts a lot of thought into a painting before making it, God has many plans for this universe and everything in it.

God had specific thoughts and visions before he created everything. He still knows the plans and thoughts he has for us.

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”

Revelations 22:13

God is the beginning and the end. God has always existed.

God Is Light And Love

“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.”

1 John 1:5-7

God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. God is only good, there is no darkness in him.

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

1 John 4:7-8

God is love. God’s love is unconditional. There is nothing that we have done to deserve his love. God loves us because of who we are.

God Is God And He Is Faithful And Kind

“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.”

Deuteronomy 7:9

God is God and he is faithful. God can never not be faithful, faithful is who he is.

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;

The Lord is good, God is so good towards us.

And the truth of the Lord endures forever.
Praise the Lord!”

God is kind, his merciful kindness is great towards us.

God Is Relational

“God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”

God has called us into fellowship with his son, Jesus Christ our Lord. We were created for relationships, for a relationship with our Father and creator and the people around us.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Jeremiah 29:11

God knows the plans he has for us. God is not confused about who we are and why we exist, he has never been confused and will never be confused. He will always know who you are and why he made you.

God wants to communicate with you. God always listens and longs to reveal things to you.

God Is Holy And Righteous

“Who will not fear you, Lord,
    and bring glory to your name?
For you alone are holy.
All nations will come
    and worship before you,
for your righteous acts have been revealed.”

Revelations 15:4

God is holy. His righteous acts have been revealed. We can see in everything that God does that he is holy and righteous.

“The Lord is righteous in all his ways
    and faithful in all he does.”

Psalm 145:17

God Never Changes

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

Hebrews 13:8

Circumstances around us change all the time. Sometimes we are living in easier times and sometimes harder. But there is one thing that never changes and that is who God is.

Jesus is the same yesterday and today and forever. Putting our trust in him makes a firm foundation in life.

God Is Powerful And Almighty

“He determines the number of the stars
    and calls them each by name.
Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
    his understanding has no limit.”

Psalm 147:4-5

God determines the number of stars and calls them each by name. When looking up at the stars, it is easy to remember how big God is. He is so much greater than what we can comprehend.

When we stand beside a huge mountain or in the middle of a big forrest with tall trees, we can understand that the creator of it all is so much greater than us.

“But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.””

Matthew 19:26

With God all things are possible. God is greater than everything else.

“Great is our Lord, and mighty in power;
His understanding is infinite.”

Psalm 147:5

The Lord is mighty in power, his understanding is infinite.

Jesus Is Our Savior

“Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
    stricken by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
    and by his wounds we are healed.”

His Burden Is Light

God Is Our Comfort and Rock To Stand On

God comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

We can bring comfort to others because he comforts us.

    like a spring whose waters never fail.”

God wants to guide us.

God Is Wise

“to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.”

Asking God for wisdom is wise because God is wise.

 “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

James 1:5

God wants to guide us and give us the wisdom that we need to live the lives we are called to live.

God Is Strong In Our Weakness, Our Courage When We Are Afraid

“And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in weakness. When we are weak, God is strong.

The reason to why we don’t need to fear is that God is with us. We don’t have to be afraid for the Lord our God, goes with us. He will not leave us or forsake us.

Jesus promises us that he will give us peace.

God Is Everything For Everybody

Our children get so excited with everything that is cute. Stuffed animals that have big glittery eyes are a big hit right now. Our oldest daughter got a cute stuffed cat for her birthday a few weeks ago, it has big glittery eyes, and poor her, her little sister wants to play with it so often. 😀

What makes a coloring page cute then? Well, I guess we all have different answers to that question. The coloring pages in this blog post have cute faces on them.

A Calm Activity For Younger Kids

Having some free printable pictures to color on hand is a go-to activity in our household. Sitting down around the kitchen table and doing some crafts or some coloring is an activity all of our children really like. It gives us a calm moment sometimes in the middle of a busy day, our kids ask for an activity like that sometimes multiple times a day.

And I also really do like to just sit down and breathe for a moment. 😀 So that is a tip for you to try if you have some active toddlers and smaller kids running around. Try coloring, maybe it will become a favorite activity for your family as well.

Cute Animal Pictures To Color

Here are some cute animal pictures to color. A part of the idea for these coloring pages with animals came from the interest our children have in stuffed animals at the moment. Both real-life animals and stuffed animals can be so so cute.

Last summer we visited a place here near where we live where we got to see elephants, giraffes, and all kinds of different types of animals. It was so much fun to see the variety of so many different animals, the elephants and giraffes were even bigger than we had expected.

Koalas was one of my favorite animals when I was a child. To be honest, I don’t know so much about them. We definitely don’t have them here in Scandinavia where we live but they seem so calm and friendly. And so cute of course!

The Creation Tells About The Creator

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

Animals are a wonderful part of the creation that God has made. God’s creativity is so evident in his creation. It is such an amazing thing that we get to enjoy all the beautiful nature that God has blessed us with.

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, have clearly been seen, being understood from what has been made. God’s creativity and His character are evident in everything He has created.

It is easy to understand that God is a very generous and good Father when we are out in nature. He created the earth in such a beautiful way and later He created us in a way so that we can enjoy it.

As we spend some time coloring with our children we can also use that time to talk about that, children are so good at seeing the beauty in creation. Sometimes I can be so busy that I just pass a lot of beautiful things without noticing but our children always stop to look at beautiful flowers and rocks and stones, whatever is in their path never gets ignored. I try to learn from them and get better at marveling at God’s creation when I have the opportunity.

Three Things We Never Get Tired Of Looking At

I don’t know if this is a global saying but where I come from we say that there are three things that we never get tired of looking at: the sea, fire, and babies. We tend to be captivated by these three things.

I could sit for hours looking at a newborn baby, same with sitting in front of a fireplace, there is something so captivating with fire that makes it so cozy to just sit and just be. Same thing with the sea. God’s creation is truly so amazing.

So, yeah there is definitely something really special with enjoying God’s creativity. We just need to remember to not get so busy that we stop seeing all the beautiful things that God has created. Our children can have an important role in that.

Jochebed, the mother of Moses

Moses is one of the main people in the Bible, but his life could have ended quickly. 

Pharaoh, the king of Egypt was scared that the Israelites would become too many and powerful and ordered for all male Hebrew babies to be killed. Moses’ mother however decides to hide him for 3 months and later she places him in a basket and lets the basket travel down the river of Nile and he ends up being found by Pharaoh’s daughter and raised in the palace. Moses is the one that is chosen to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. 

What we can learn from this woman in the Bible: Jochebed wasn’t the one that led the Israelites out of Egypt, but her decision to first save the life of her son and later to let him go and send him down the Nile enabled for that to happen. Her part was not the most visible one, but without her the rest would not have happened. If we are faithful in what God calls us to do the consequences of that are sometimes bigger than we could ever imagine.

Rahab, the one that hid the spies. 

When the Israelites had made it to the borders of the promised land they came to a city called Jericho. Joshua sent out two spies to the city and when the spies got in trouble with the people in the city they are helped by Rahab, a prostitute. 

Later when the walls of Jericho fall, the house of Rahab remains standing, because she helped the people of God. Rahab is also the mother of Boaz, who later marries Ruth that we will read about in the next paragraph, and she is also mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus. 

What can we learn from this woman in the Bible: Rahab, being a prostitute, was not a likely person to be in the family tree of Jesus, but the book of Hebrew teaches us that God saw the heart of Rahab, and she was a woman of faith. We might not feel good enough to do what God is calling us to do, but from this story we can learn that it’s not about us, but about believing in Him!

Ruth, the Moabite

We encounter this woman in the book of Ruth that starts with the sad story of a woman named Naomi that loses both her husband and her two sons in the span of 10 years. One of Naomi’s sons was married to a woman named Ruth, a moabite. At this time they were living in the country of Moab, but there was a famine and Naomi found out that there was food in Judah, where she was originally from, so she chooses to move back. Ruth decides to follow her with the famous words: “Your people will be my people and your God my God”. 

Ruth and Naomi move to Judah and much is uncertain, but the Lord is faithful to them. They find favor with a man named Boaz and he allows Ruth to gather food in his fields. Later in the story Boaz and Ruth end up getting married and they have a son named Obed, who is the grandfather of no one less than King David. 

Lesson we can learn from this woman in the Bible: Ruth risked her future when she chose to follow Naomi, but God saw her and was faithful to her. God can be trusted even when we take difficult steps of obedience, He has a bigger plan than what we can figure out!

Esther, queen of Persia

Esther was a jew living in the Persian Empire. She entered the beauty pageant arranged by the king to choose a new queen and ended up winning the competition and therefore became queen of Persia. During this time there was a decree made that all the jewish people would be killed during a specific date and Esther together with Mordecai, another jew living in Persia, ended up coming up with a plan that in the end saved the jewish people from being killed. 

The famous phrase in the book of Esther is “for such a time as this”, when Mordecai tells Esther that perhaps the very reason that she became queen right at this time was that she could play a role in saving her own people from being killed. 

Lesson we can learn from this woman in the Bible: Esther was chosen to be queen, but her real calling for this time was not to be just queen, but her position enabled her to be part of the rescue plan for her people. God can use people in positions of influence to release blessing and His purposes over people. Maybe you are where you are right now for something more than just what you do?

Mary, mother of Jesus

Lastly of our lessons from 5 women in the Bible, we will meet Mary. Mary is chosen to become pregnant with Jesus and she gets these news through a visit from the angel Gabriel. This puts her in a difficult position since she is not married yet, and it’s unsure how the people around her will react, but Mary says yes to this task and ends up giving birth to Jesus in a stable. She also ends up having to flee to Egypt to save his life and later she has to see him be crucified. 

Mary got to be part of the most central story in human history; the birth of Jesus Christ. She said yes to this task, a great honor, but it also came with a price. 

What we can learn from this woman in the Bible: Mary said yes and it enabled Jesus to be born. Are we ready to do the same so Jesus can be born into situations and the lives of people? To say yes to discomfort and ready to take risks? It’s a great honor to serve Him, the King of Kings, but at times it also comes with a price. 

These were lessons from 5 women in the Bible, all so different, but they all said yes to what God had for them and through that ended up leaving their mark in history. It wasn’t easy, but God made it possible, sometimes through impossible circumstances. He is still writing His great story and He is still involving people ready to say yes to Him. Does He have your yes?

The words of prophet Micah

So why was Jesus born in Betlehem? Around 700 years before Jesus was born there was a prophet named Micah that was active in Judah. He prophesied the words about the birth of Jesus and he also mentioned the location. He said the ruler over Israel with origin from the ancient times would be born in Betlehem Ephrathah. The name Betlehem means “House of bread” and Ephrathah means “fruitfulness”.

Right here in the “house of bread” Jesus, who later calls himself the bread of life, is born. He was the one that would give mankind the answer to the deep hunger of this world.

The birthplace of king David

Betlehem wasn’t only the birthplace of Jesus, but also of king David. The Bible clearly speaks of that the Saviour they all were waiting for was to come from the family of David, we can among other places see this in 2 Sam 7:12-16.

“When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands.  But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.  Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.“

How perfect isn’t in that the story would bring us back to Betlehem for the long awaited Messiah?

The Census of the entire Roman world – how Jesus ended up going to Bethlehem.

Ceasar Augustus issued a decree of a census for the whole Roman world. Joseph and Mary, pregnant with Jesus at this point, needed to travel from Nazareth, where they lived, to go Bethlehem. When they were in Bethlehem Jesus was born, and the prophesy of Micah ended up being fulfilled. Here we see the hand of God in the events of history as well, for Joseph and Mary to be moved to Bethlehem just in the right time.

Oh, little town of Bethlehem

This year is a special year for the city of Bethlehem, it’s a city in a country of conflict and unlike the years before the hotels are empty. It’s looking to be a silent Christmas, quite the opposite of how it was the first Christmas. Jesus was born in a stable because the city was so full of people.

Still, even after over 2000 years, the story of Christmas is as relevant as ever, maybe more than ever before. In a world of chaos and conflict, we need a Saviour. Let the call to come and seek Him go over the whole world as we worship Him this Christmas. He is here and He is still the answer to the hunger pains of this world. Jesus, King of Kings, born in Bethlehem, the “house of bread”.

Making decorations with salt dough is a fun craft activity for kids. It is super simple to do and you probably have what you need at home already. It’s definitely one of your favorite craft activities. This is the recipe we use.

Salt dough recipe

1 cup of flour

1/2 cup salt

1/4- 1/2 cup water

1 1/2 tablespoons rapeseed oil

Mix flour, salt, water and rapeseed oil together. Start with 1/4 cup water and keep adding more until you have a smooth dough.

Salt dough is so easy to make and it can be used for many different creative ideas.

At the time when I am writing this blog post, we are out in the woods in Finland at our summer place. Maybe not the place where we usually spend our holidays in December but because of the current situation with the pandemic, here we are.

We live in Sweden so as we travel to Finland for Christmas, we need to spend a few days at our summer place before meeting my family. We are really enjoying our time so we have no problem with that.

We are enjoying nature and also, and we prepared with paper, colored pencils, and different kinds of craft things because we knew that we also needed a lot of ideas on creative ideas we could do inside. It gets dark outside, pretty early, already at 3 pm it’s starting to get darker outside so we spend a lot of time indoors.

Salt dough is one of the things we have made to keep us busy.

Salt Dough Ornaments

You can make so many different things with salt dough, we decided to make some ornaments. You could hang these in a window or in your Christmas tree.

Here is how we made our salt dough decorations:

Roll the dough to 1/5 inch thick and make your decorations. You can use cookie cutters or cut them out by hand. 

Bake in the oven for approximately 2 hours on 100 degrees celsius/210 F. Turn the decorations over after half the time baking.

There is really no limits to what kind of things you can create with the dough. So feel free to be creative and try different things out!

Done! These we hang up in the window as decorations in our daughters room. She was so so happy. Kids really know how to appreciate the small things in life! 🙂
