Basic Sock Knitting Pattern

In this blog post, I will share the basic sock knitting pattern I learned to knit as a child when I first started knitting. This is the knitting pattern I still use very often when I want to knit a pair of socks fast and easily.

Further down, I will share the sock pattern I have learned to really appreciate these last few years. Both knitting patterns are really easy to knit and have lots of things in common when it comes to the way the heel is knitted and so on.

Basic Sock Knitting Pattern – Nr 1

This first basic sock knitting pattern is knitted by yarn that is suitable for needles size 4. These socks are fast to knit because the yarn is quite thick, which also makes the socks warm and cozy.

Depending on who you are knitting the socks for, you can choose to cast on fewer or more stitches. In the pattern below, there are two options mentioned, the first option is for a child of around 5 years old and the other one for adults. Depending on how loosely you knit, you can also vary the amount of stitches you cast on.

Cast on 32-48 sts and divide on four double-pointed needles(size 4).

Start knitting rib pattern(1K, 1P). Depending on how long you want the cuff/ankle to be, you just continue knitting the rib pattern until you are happy with the length.

How to knit the heel

Knit back and forth on needles 1 and 2 to make the back of the heel. When the heel flap measures 4-6 cm, it’s time to start decreasing.

Knit until 5-7 sts remain, slip the next stitch as if to knit, knit 1 stitch, pass the slipped stitch over the stitch worked, and turn over the piece.

Purl until 5-7 sts remain, slip the next stitch as if to purl, purl 1 stitch, pass the slipped stitch over the stitch worked, and turn over the piece.

Knit until 5-7 sts remain and so on…

Continue like that until 8-12 sts are left in total on the 2 needles.

How To Knit The Rest Of The Sock

Pick up 4-6 sts on each side of the heel flap so that both needles have 8-12 sts and start knitting the foot on the sock using all four needles.

If you need to pick up more than 4-6 sts on the sides, you can do so and decrease the number of sts every second row until you have 8-12 sts on each needle. In that case, I decrease at the end of the first needle, counted from under the foot by knitting the last two sts together and at the beginning of the fourth needle by slipping the first stitch as if to knit, knit 1 stitch, pass the slipped stitch over the stitch worked.

When you have 8-12 sts on each needle, continue knitting until the sock reaches over the little toe. Start decreasing the amount of sts by one on every needle when you knit.

Knit the last two sts together through the front loop on the 1st(counted from under the foot) and the 3rd needle, and the first two sts together through the back loop on the 2nd and 4th needle. Continue like that until 2 sts remain on each needle. Cut the yarn and pull it through the stitches.

Done! 🙂

Basic Sock Knitting Pattern – Nr 2

These last few years, I have really started to like this other sock knitting pattern that I have published in this blog post:

This sock knitting pattern is also very basic and simple. If you want to have a colorwork pattern on the cuff, this knitting pattern is the one to choose.

I hope you will have lots of fun knitting!
