Christmas Candle Jar DIY

Making you own Christmas candle jar can be a fun Christmas craft idea for cold days spent inside.

It’s getting colder outside and the holiday season is approaching. We are enjoying more time inside and crafts are as always a favorite in our home.

Last week we made some lanterns that are super easy to make and look really pretty.

If you want to make these yourself, continue reading! 🙂

Christmas Candle Jar Instructions

The things you need are:

  • glass jars
  • glue that is transparent when dried
  • salt (fine or flake salt)
  • jute twine string
  • tread
  • some wintery greenery

This craft activity is fun to do with your kids, it’s more suitable for a little older kids. I made these with our soon 4 year old daughter. She thought the gluing part was fun but the decorating part is easier when you are older.

We used some empty Semper baby food jars to make our lanterns. We left them in water a few hours first to take off the labels.

As glue we used a decoupage glue we had at home. You can use pretty much any glue that is transparent when it dries and that works on glass.

As “snow” we used a mix of fine and flake salt. The fine salt is better for coverage and the flake salt make the “snow” look more like actual snowflakes. You can choose salt depending on what kind of effect you want to create.

Before you add the other decorations it’s good to let the glass jars dry for a couple of hours.

Decorating Your Christmas Candle Jar

When the glue has dried it is time to decorate you Christmas candle jar.

You can use some greenery that you find outside in the forrest if you have the opportunity to go outside. This can be a fun activity for your children as well. Going out looking for some pretty things to decorate your jar with can be a really nice break to your craft activity.

We went outside and picked a few pine cones and paradise apples to decorate our lanterns. I think our daughter enjoyed the part of going outside most of the whole process. 😀

Going outside to find some decorations is a fun thing to do, if you have pine trees close to where you live you can use some of that or if not I’m sure you will find something else that you can decorate with.

To finish our lanterns we tied some jute twine string around!

Done! 😉

Later we made a bigger lantern where we glued some text to the glass jar before we covered it with salt!

The text we used can be downloaded here below!
