Bible Verses About Faith Over Fear
Here are some encouraging Bible verses about choosing faith over fear.
The words “Fear not!” are repeated so many times in the Bible. Fear is a very powerful thing that many times can affect the decisions we make in life.
Fear can make us retreat into our safe zone and make us avoid uncomfortable situations. For some of us, fear becomes something we battle with every day and greatly impacts the way we choose to live.
To be honest, I have to say that fear many times has made me not do some things that I now later wish I would have had the courage to do. Fear robs us of opportunities and freedom. Living in fear keeps us trapped with limitations.
I have come to realize that escaping things out of fear doesn’t make the fear go away, it just seems to get bigger the more space I give it.
Fear Is a Part Of Life
“Fear not!” is mentioned so many times in the Bible because God knows that we need to hear that. I think we sometimes might think that we are the only ones facing fear. Sometimes we think that the big leaders never fear anything.
But I think we all struggle with fear, but the things that trigger fear are very different for different people.
So, fear is very common, we all feel it. In some situations, fear is a very valid and actually a good thing. When we are in real danger it is good to get a rush of adrenaline so that we can get to safety.
In our everyday life, it is important to know what our motivators are. Are we driven by fear or do we choose to live by faith?
Choosing Faith Over Fear
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”
2 Timothy 1:7
This verse has been so helpful to me. In any situation when I start to feel insecure I try to remind myself of the fact that God gives us a spirit of power, love and self-discipline.
I think the word love is very powerful. We are called to love and serve others. Many times I think we do feel insecure when we focus on what other people think about us and in those moments we can shift our focus to the people around us. How can we love the ones close to us?
If we can shift our focus from ourselves to others a lot of our insecurities fade away.
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
Psalm 56:3
In Psalm 56 David says that he puts his trust in God when he is afraid. We can see that even David knew he would face times of fear. David expected those times to come. We all face times when we are afraid. David knew what to do when those times came. Really knowing God’s greatness gives us a lot of comfort in knowing that God is with us.
Bible Verses About Faith Over Fear
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 5:6-7
Having open communication with our heavenly Father is so helpful in our everyday life. We can talk to him about everything that we face and be honest about the things that cause fear.
God wants to meet you exactly where you are.
“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!””
Romans 8:15
We get to relate to God as sons and daughters. We have three children, seven years and under. All of them tend to turn to us as parents when something happens that makes them sad or afraid. We are their safety.
In that same way, God can be our safety, we can turn to him with everything that burdens us and that makes us feel fearful and afraid.
We did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear but a spirit of adoption as sons.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
John 14:27
When we face times of uncertainty and fear arises we get to remember that there is peace beyond our understanding in the presence of our heavenly Father.
Hard Times Will Come
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
Psalm 23:4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. Sometimes, as I said earlier, I have let fear determine the decisions I make, in the hope of the fears going away if I avoid the triggers.
But if we understand that even in the darkest valleys and hardest time, we get to cast all our fears on our God. We know that even if we make the decisions that makes us face our fears, we still get to live reassured that God, almighty God, is with us.
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:6-7
We can cast all our anxieties on God because he cares for us. God is not far away or ignorant, he truly cares about you. He knows all the things that make you afraid and insecure and he waits for us to come to him with those things.
We need to come to him to give him the space to work on our hearts in moments that are hard for us.
There is so much power in prayer! I think that when it comes to praying in times of fear I think our prayer should be focused on praying for our heart to change, not our circumstances. Because no matter our circumstances we can live by faith and in peace.
So letting God change our hearts is so powerful and a really good antidote for fear having a grip on us.
God Is Greater Than Anything Else
“Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.”
Luke 10:19
God’s power is greater than anything else. All the things that can feel like they are so so big are always smaller than the power of our creator and loving father.
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”
1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love. Love casts out all fear.
Faith Comes By Hearing Bible Verse
“Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.”
Romans 10:17
Reading the word of God. Meditating on it and letting it change our hearts grows our faith. Faith comes by hearing.
Living with the word of God as our guide makes our faith grow and where faith grows, fear has no power. Digging deeper into God’s word and letting the truth change the way we view ourselves, the people around us, and our surroundings gives a firm foundation for a life of freedom.
Sometimes it is easier to let the word of God really sink in when we do something creative so down below there is a free printable with some of the verses from this blog post about choosing faith over fear.
Feel free to download it and write down the things that God was highlighting as you read this blog post.
You can live as a son/daughter that isn’t bound to fear.
