Almost 10 years ago I got asked the question: Who are you? I was not allowed to say anything about what I did like what kind of education or career aspirations I had.

I started out: I am Monica, I’m from Finland… and I honestly did not know what more to say!

I think we often define ourselves depending on what we have achieved in life. Our profession, skills, and relationship status become our identity. I know that happens because that was the case for me. And I guess I’m not the only one.

At that point I had already heard multiple times that our identity is supposed to be in Christ, but what does that even mean? That was a question that I asked myself.

I started to understand that God, as our creator, knows why we exist and what purpose we have in life. For me, understanding these things took time and I had to allow God to renew the way I viewed myself.

At the same time having our identity in Him is a very natural thing just because He is the one that made us. He knows us so well.

When we get to know Him and understand why He created us, we understand why we exist and for what reason.

Having Our Identity In Jesus Gives Stability

If we place our identity in our achievements, our life feels so meaningful and amazing as long as we are successful.

If I were really good at some sport and I would be getting better and better and I would be winning competitions and so on, everything would feel so amazing. But the day when I get injured or maybe I am not the person winning anymore, my identity would be shaken.

Everything we achieve while we are here on this earth is fleeting. We can achieve many great things, there is nothing wrong with that! I think we are made in a way that makes us really enjoy building things and creating.

You Are Wonderfully Made

But first and foremost we will always be God’s creation. We will be sons and daughters that are so loved by him. We are created by God so that we can give him glory.

God’s love for us is unconditional. There is nothing that you can do that will make God love you more or less.

Our identity as a son or daughter that is wonderfully made by God for a life full of purpose will never be shaken. No matter if people would say we are successful or not.

So having our identity in Jesus means that no matter how life is going we are still of the same value. You will always be so valuable in God’s eyes.

Who I Am In Christ – Ephesians 1:3-14

What does God say then about us in His word?

During the coming months, we will dig deeper into what our Father says about us in the Bible. Ephesians 1: 3-14 is a good place to start. These verses tell us much about who we are.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

Ephesians 1:3

You are blessed, capable, and victorious! You are blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ!

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.

Ephesians 1:4

Through Him you are holy and blameless!
You are forgiven and redeemed!

Jesus Is Our Savior

In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.

Ephesians 1:5-6

In verse 5 we can read about how apostle Paul, who wrote Ephesians, describes that God predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ. Being adopted into a family is such a beautiful way of explaining how deep our relationship with God is meant to be.

When we choose to believe and be followers of Jesus we are adopted to sonship through Him. Our heavenly Father is a loving Father, you are so loved by him! So we are not slaves or servants, we are daughters and sons to our Father.

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us.

Ephesians 1:7-8

You are forgiven and redeemed! It is not through all the amazing things we do in life that make us worthy of God’s love. It is not through our actions that we are invited to be sons and daughters, it is through the blood of Jesus.

Jesus made it possible for us to receive forgiveness of our sins. We are forgiven and redeemed through him.

Your Life Has Purpose

“With all wisdom and understanding, he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10 to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.”

Ephesians 1:9-12

You were chosen and your life has purpose! You are guided by the one Most High God!

Verse 12 ends with saying that we, who put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. We get to give glory to him through our lives.

13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

Ephesians 1:13

You are saved! You live free from oppression!

“When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession – to the praise of his glory.”

Through believing we receive forgiveness, and we get to glorify God with our lives. We are not left alone but God wants to be a part of our every day lives. He gives us the Holy Spirit as our helper.

These verses in Ephesians show God’s heart for us and what we are invited into.

One thing is to read all these things and then comes the sometimes harder part of choosing to believe and letting God transform our way of seeing ourselves! It is a life-changing journey!
