I remember it was during a season that I was really busy as a mom and I had to find some time every day to recharge. It is so easy to use the little time that we are given to spend as we wish on our phones.

I think I need a reminder of not spending the few minutes I get in the evening when the kids are sleeping on my phone, so I made this iPhone wallpaper with the same message, but this time with more summery activities.

Summertime brings other opportunities to be creative than winter. These last few years, I have been planting some vegetables from seed in the spring. Last year I planted some tomatoes and none of the plants survived.

I got excited to put them out on the balcony when the weather got warmer in May, but the cold of the night made them all die.

Summery Creative Activities

This year, though, I planted some tomato seeds at the beginning of March, and they are now growing really well. I saw that two of them already have some signs of blooming, so I hope to have better luck this year.

I am not going to put them outside before sometime in June, just so I don’t risk killing them this year as well.

Other activities I really look forward to doing this summer include spending time close to the sea. Being close to the sea and enjoying the beach is so nice. During summertime, I always wish I lived close to the sea so we could spend more time enjoying it.

Summer Knitting

One thing that I usually take a break from doing during summer, but that I tried not to stop doing during summer last year, was knitting. Knitting has always been a winter activity for me that brings coziness to cold evenings.

But summer knitting is pretty cool, also, I have realized! Knitting in cotton is a little bit different than knitting in warm yarns like wool, but it is really nice to vary knitting and to try some new kind of projects.

As I had some yellow yarn in my yarn stash, I decided to start knitting yellow socks for our youngest child. Knitting for our children always makes a faster project, and lately, our children have been very happy when they realize that I am knitting for them.

That has definitely not always been the case, especially since our son has been so upset with itchy yarns but lately, he as well has started to put in orders on things he would like me to knit for him. That is so nice!

But, anyhow, this week these socks have been on my needles.

The knitting pattern is really beginner friendly, and it can be varied in so many different ways by choosing different kind of yarns and colors.

These chicken socks were really fun and fast to knit. What chicken really has to do with Easter is a different question. Hehe.

A few days, ago I was picking my son up from school, and his teacher told me that my son had been really talkative when they talked about Easter that day. She got curious about why he knew so much about the reason we celebrate Easter and asked my older daughter if we go to church.

Indeed, we do. It was nice to hear that our children know the Easter story because the victory Jesus won is truly life-changing, and that is so worth celebrating!

I think I have heard someone say that chickens are a symbol of life, and that makes them a good reminder of what Easter really is about.

We are already in April, and spring is in full swing. And with warmer weather, I usually stop knitting, but last year I challenged myself to try some summer knit projects instead, and I really enjoyed that. So I am starting to think of knitting projects to try this year. Last year I knitted tops for both the girls and me.

Here is a list of 3 simple things to knit. These knitting projects are all really fast knitting projects, but you can also use these projects to try new techniques and enhance your knitting skills.

Simple Knitting Projects

1. Washcloths
2. Bookmarks
3. Scrunchies

Washcloth

Washcloths can be knitted in so many ways. You can knit a washcloth that is very simple, or you can choose a pattern that challenges you a little bit. Whichever knitting pattern you choose, a washcloth can be knitted in a couple of hours.

I knitted one of the knitting patterns, this washcloth you see above is very easy to knit, you only need to alternate knit stitch and purl stitch. I used a cotton yarn, which I think is a good yarn choice for washcloths.

As with any other knitting project, you can vary the way it looks by choosing different kinds of yarns and colors.

Bookmarks

I have not knitted a lot of lace before. And that actually makes me be a little hesitant to knit knitting projects with lace, it feels challenging to read the knitting charts when there are so many new symbols I don’t recognize.

Details are also not really my thing, I usually really keep thing very simple. But, I thought, as bookmarks are so fast and simple to knit, this could be a really good way to learn a little bit about knitting lace. And I do recommend trying this knitting pattern if you want to knit a fast lace knitting project.

But, of course, there are so many different ways to knit bookmarks, you don’t need to choose a bookmark with a lace pattern. You could make a bookmark with only the knitted stitch.

Scrunchies

These last couple of weeks, I have knitted scrunchies in many different colors. Knitting a scrunchie takes about one hour. It is such a fast knitting project. Our daughters have realized that they can wish for a scrunchie in a specific color and that it doesn’t take very much time to make them.

I think it is so fun that our children is starting to be interested in knitting and start making orders, I am very happy to knit for them.

So, those are three knitting projects that are really fast to knit. You can vary the difficulty level in so many ways, and trying new knitting techniques on small knitting projects is a really good idea.

Easy Cable Knit Project For Beginners

This was a really easy knitting project that I think beginner knitters would really enjoy. Knitting cables looks so advanced, but it doesn’t have to be so hard.

If you are looking for an easy cable knit project, I would say this is a really good one to start with.

The knitting pattern for this headband is found in the link to Drops design you can find at the beginning of the blog post.

I almost followed that knitting pattern but chose to knit in the round instead to make the headband a little thicker, just as my daughter wanted. 😉 I have to say that this is a new season of knitting, I am not used to that many options when I knit for my children.

My oldest daughter is now 9 years old, and I had to start from the beginning 3 times over to meet her expectations. But she was really happy with the end result, so that is good!

Learn To Knit Cables

In that video, she explains very well how cables are knitted without making it seem complicated.

When you get the hang of it, you will have a lot of opportunities to practice if you choose to knit this headband, because even if you knit it for a child, there is a lot of repetitions involved.

You can definitely do it! I highly recommend that you try!

The first cable knit project I finished was a beanie. When I was in my teenage years and I remember I wore that beanie so much!! I had friends asking if I could knit one for them as well. I think that was one of the first knitting projects that I was actually proud of finishing.

There is something with homemade knit that sometimes makes it look so homemade, and when I was young, I thought I wasn’t that cool to wear something that looked homemade. But knitting projects with cables tend to look quite neat and cool.

Sock Knitting Patterns

In Finland, where I grew up, everyone are taught how to knit in school. We are taught how to knit socks and gloves, maybe that is why I got going on knitting accessories. I think socks was the second thing that we got to knit in school. The first knitting project was a really simple bee, if I remember correctly and the second project were socks.

I remember that we got to draw the socks that we wanted to knit and plan what colors we wanted to combine. I knitted a pair of sock similar to these below but the base color was light blue and the stripes white.

Since that I have knitted so many pairs of socks that I can’t count how many. When I had babies I knitted socks for them and now when I have kids that are growing I get to knit new socks every year for them. 🙂

Glove Knitting Patterns

Another type of accessories that we got to knit in school was gloves. The gloves we knitted was Lovikka gloves, that are gloves typical for Northern Sweden. These gloves were designed by a woman from Lovikka, a small town in Sweden and are easy to knit and really warm.

The third category of accessories that I like to knit is hats. This is an accessorie that we did not learn how to knit in school but that I have knitted a lot these last few years. Hats are easy to knit and there are so many different kind of hats you can knit.

Anyhow, knitted beanies or hats are quite easy to make. When I was around 15 years old, I knitted a beanie that I used a lot. It was the first knitted piece I made with a braided pattern. And I really liked that hat! I wore that beanie soo many times!

After that, the same thing has happened twice, that I have knitted a beanie that I have liked so much that I have ended up using the beanie a lot!

This last beanie I knitted with a folded brim, I have used a lot. Even at work, it’s so cold in our office space that I often have it on me when I’m documenting. I have gotten quite many comments on it, maybe it’s a little strange to wear a beanie in the office. But it keeps me warm.

As beanies have been a little bit of a favorite thing for me to knit during the years that have passed, I have published a couple of the knitting patterns I like on this website.

Knit Beanie Pattern with a Folded Brim

Here is a link to a knitted beanie with a folded brim. This is the latest favorite knitted beanie pattern that I am knitting again at the moment. Right now, I am knitting the beanie with two strands of yarn. One of the yarns is a soft wool yarn, and the other yarn is a soft, brushed alpaca silk yarn. I really hope it won’t be itchy. I really like how it looks and hope it will turn into a new favorite of mine.

Easy Knit Beanie Pattern

This next beanie is really easy to knit. This hat I knitted for my husband a few years ago, but I think I might have worn this beanie even more than him. We both really like this beanie.

The only thing that stands out a little with this beanie, apart from it simpleness in knitting, is that the knitted stitches are knitted with a twisted knit. This makes the hat look more even in its stitches. Especially for beginner knitters, twisted knitting can be an easy way to even out your knitted pieces so they look professional. 😉

Easy Knitted Hat Pattern

This hat is made with yarn suitable for needles size 3,5. I used yarn made of wool, you can choose the material you prefer.

If you choose to use a yarn made of wool, it’s good to choose merino wool, for example, or another wool yarn that isn’t itchy. If a hat is itchy, I can feel it on my forehead when I’m wearing it, and it makes me choose another hat instead.

Cast on 132 sts and divide on four double-pointed needles(size 3,5) or a circular needle(size 3,5).

Start knitting rib pattern(1 twisted knit, 1 purl). The twisted knit is knitted through the back loop.

Keep knitting until the knitted piece measures around 16 cm. Then it is time to start decreasing.

First, a decrease is made every other row. It is easier to have the sts decided on four different needles with 33 sts on each when you are decreasing.

How To Decrease Stitches When Knitting A Hat

Knit the first two sts together through the front loop and the last two sts together through the back loop on each needle.

Knit one row without decreasing.
Knit one row with decreasing as earlier described.
Knit one row without decreasing.
Knit one row with decreasing.
Knit one row without decreasing.

From now on, decreasing is made on every row until 2 sts remain on each needle. Cut the yarn and pull it through the stitches.

This is my favorite way to decrease a knitted hat. I think it looks quite neat. But all knitters, I guess, find their own favorite way to knit things.

Knitting Basic Accessories

If you haven’t noticed, I am in a phase where I am knitting a lot of basic accessories. I am keeping it really basic because I have noticed that the knitted pieces that I reach for over and over again are actually the really basic ones.

So right now I am knitting some basics for myself, and I will keep doing that for the other family members in our family as well.

Animal Mittens Knitting Pattern

Another way to make your toddler wear mittens could be through making them look like an animal. When our oldest daughter came out of the frozen phase, she used these hedgehog mittens a lot.

I actually ended up knitting them in a bigger size as well when she grew out of them, just because she liked them so much.

Mittens For Toddlers – FREE Knitting Patterns

All three of these mittens are quite similar in the way they are knitted. To make the mittens stay on, it’s good to have about4 or 5 cm of an elastic ribbed pattern by the wrist.

Sometimes I use double knit and double purls, and sometimes single knit and single purl. It depends on what kind of design you like for the mittens that you knit.

Apart from that, I also have realized, that the softer the yarn, the more toddlers seem to like the mittens. This differs a lot from toddler to toddler of course, but especially one of our children really can’t stand if yarn is itchy at all.

What kind of yarn you choose for the mittens you knit is of course, up to you. I usually go for a soft merino wool, or if I want a more economic option, there are many acrylic yarns that are soft also.

This week we are visiting my family in Finland for Christmas, and our expectations were that we would go skiing. However, a couple of days before we arrived, the little snow on the ground melted away. So there is no snow at all at the moment.

But as we are waiting, we can at least do some Winter themed coloring.

Holidays often mean traveling for our family. One of the activities that we pack for our children when we travel is often some coloring pages and coloring pens. Coloring has a calming effect on most children.

I think we, as adults, can feel the same thing that doing something creative can be relaxing.

When we travel, our kids always seem to have a lot of energy, and at times it can be hard to know how to help them relax, sometimes coloring works really well.

In that blog post, you can see the charts on how to combine the different colors to knit the colorwork pattern.

In March, I was back in Finland, and we could enjoy some really cool Northern lights, and out of that came the idea of knitting a pair of mittens with the pattern of Northern lights. The idea would not fade, so I thought I had to do something about it.

But as I had the experience of trying to design knitting charts in Photoshop, and it took so much time, I Googled to see if there would be an easier way to make colorwork charts. And that’s when I found the app called Stitchart. Stitchart is a free tool you can use to make knitting charts.

A FREE Knitting Chart Maker

Stitchart has since then been so fun to use to take ideas and make charts easily, without putting in many hours to see if an idea could work or not.

Designing colorwork so that it looks like northern light has not been easy. And I am still not sure if I am happy with the result. I designed the knitting chart and knitted one of two mittens, and now I would love to get your opinion on the project. Does this pattern look like northern lights?

Knitting this kind of colorwork still takes me quite much time, so I would love to get some feedback before I knit the other glove.

I am not really sure if you can see it clearly that the pattern is meant to be northern lights. Making weave patterns when you knit is not the easiest thing to achieve.

So, feel free to leave a comment and give your suggestions on how to make these mittens really cool!
