Nordic Christmas Stocking – FREE Knitting Pattern

Here is a free knitting pattern on how to knit a Nordic Christmas stocking.

Two Knitted Nordic Christmas stockings laying on the floor

I knitted these Christmas stockings with a Nordic pattern a few years ago when our oldest daughter was a baby. She is now seven years old and during these years, two more babies have been born to our family. So, these last couple of years I have tried to knit two more so that each family member would have one.

I hope to finish them this year before Christmas Eve. Let’s see how that goes.

Anyhow, knitting something specifically for Christmas with red and white yarn is very cozy. So I do enjoy knitting these right now, I just need to find enough time for it so I can finish them on time.

When I knitted the first two Christmas stockings I found some inspiration on some pictures I found online on Christmas stockings and made my own version.

So, I thought it could be fun to make them into a knitting pattern. So, here is my best try to make a knitting pattern for you that I hope you can follow easily to knit some Christmas stockings yourself.

I highly recommend trying a knitting pattern like this now in December. It is very fun to knit these stockings, there is a lot of patterns involved but I think it is very fun to see the pattern grow. If you have any questions about the pattern, don’t hesitate to leave a comment.

Nordic Christmas Stockings – FREE Knitting Pattern

As you can see in the picture above, I made two different versions of the Christmas stockings. The charts here below are based on the Christmas stocking with the snowflake. If you want to knit the other stocking just switch out the red with white and vice versa.

The yarn I chose was a yarn made of wool but you can choose any material you like. The yarn should be suitable for needles of the size 4-4,5.

Cast on 60 sts with red yarn and divide on four double-pointed needles(size 4,5).

Start knitting rib pattern(1K, 1P). Knit that same rib pattern for 5 rounds.

Knit 5 rounds with stocking stitch.

Then start following the diagram below. As there are 60 sts in total, you will knit this diagram 10 times during each round. Black stands for red and white for white yarn.

When you have finished the first diagram you will continue with this next one. I have to apologies that the colors of this next diagram are on the contrary. So the white stands for red and black for white. Sorry for that!

If you want you can choose to make a reindeer pattern instead of the snowflake, here is the diagram for that.

On the stockings with reindeer, I made a few stitches with red in between the reindeer, so it looks like it’s snowing, but if you want to do it like that or not, is of course up to you.

After finishing the snowflake or reindeer, you will continue with this next diagram.

Now it’s time to start knitting the heel.

How To Knit The Heel

Knit back and forth on needles 1 and 2 to make the back of the heel. You knit on the right side and purl on the wrong side of the heel flap. When the heel flap measures 5 cm(2 inches) it’s time to start decreasing.

Knit 20 sts, slip the next stitch as if to knit, knit 1 stitch, pass the slipped stitch over the stitch worked, and turn over the piece.

Purl 10 sts, slip the next stitch as if to knit, knit 1 stitch, pass the slipped stitch over the stitch worked, and turn over the piece.

Continue like that until 10 sts are left total on the 2 needles.

How To Knit The Rest Of The Sock

Pick up 10 sts on each side of the heel flap so that both needles have 15 sts and start knitting the foot on the sock using all four needles.

Knit one row with the same color as the heel.

Follow this diagram.

Knit two rows of white.

Now it’s time to start decreasing. I knitted this part with red yarn. Start decreasing the amount of sts by one on every needle when you knit.

Knit the last two sts together through the front loop on the 1st(counted from under the foot) and the 3rd needle and the first two sts together through the back loop on the 2nd and 4th needle. Continue like that until 2 sts remain on each needle. Cut the yarn and pull it through the stitches.

Done! 🙂

As said earlier, if something in the pattern is confusing don’t hesitate to comment and ask.
