Free Knitted Hat Pattern for Toddlers

Here is a free knitted hat pattern for 1-3 year olds.

When it comes to knitting, I like to keep it simple. Most often when I have knitted something more complicated I realize that I still reach for the basic accessories.

Accessories that are basic is easy to combine with any clothes and never go out of style.

And also, simple knitting projects are fast to complete and you are ready to go on with another fun new project. 🙂

I usually improvise when I knit and find favorite ways to make things. Here is how I like to knit a basic hat.

This hat is made with yarn suitable for needles size 3,5. I used yarn made of wool, you can choose the material you prefer.

Cast on 120 sts and divide on four double pointes needles(size 3,5) or a circular needle(size 3,5).

Start knitting rib pattern(1 twisted knit, 1 purl). The twisted knit is knitted through the back loop.

Keep knitting until it measures around 13,5 cm. Then it is time to start decreasing.

First decreasing is made every other row. It is easier to have the sts decided on four different needles with 30 sts on each when you are decreasing.

Knit the first two sts together through the front loop and the last two sts together through the back loop on each needle.

Knit one row without decreasing.
Knit one row with decreasing as earlier decribed.

Ahh! Knitting! One of the best ways to relax! 🙂

From now on decreasing is made on every row until 2 sts remain on each needle. Cut the yarn and pull it through the stitches.

Done! 🙂

How to Diversify This Knitted Hat

Even if this hat is really easy to knit you can use different kind of yarns and colors to make it your style.

Merino wool is my favorite kind of yarn at this moment. It is warm but isn’t itchy. I don’t know if it’s just our kids but oh boy our kids are sensitive to itchiness. If the yarn at all have a tendency to be itchy, they won’t wear knitted pieces.

So I have learnt by now that the yarn I use when I knit for them needs to be very soft.

If anything is unclear with the instructions for how to knit the hat, please leave a comment.
