Free Knitting Patterns – Knitting Inspiration

As a knitter, some free knitting patterns are always appreciated so I thought I would share a link with you.

https://www.garnstudio.com/home.php?cid=19

This is the place where I usually go to find knitting patterns for the projects I have in mind. Most of the time I don’t follow the knitting patterns exactly how they are but make my own version of them depending on the project I have in mind.

Garnstudio has so many different knitting patterns for men, women and children. You can find knitting patterns on sweaters, tops, socks, mittens and so many other categories. If you have a very specific idea in mind, it can be hard to find an exact knitting pattern to follow. But as there are so many different knitting patterns to choose from, you can often find a knitting pattern that is similar to your idea and just change a few things to make it work.

So if you are looking for free knitting patterns, make sure to check Garnstudio.

Free Knitting Patterns On How To Knit Socks

I used this same link to find a knitting pattern for these socks.

In November and December, I was knitting some Nordic Christmas stockings. I posted the knitting pattern here: https://underbartskapad.com/nordic-christmas-stocking-free-knitting-patterns/

Those Christmas stockings were knitted with bright red and white and that was really nice to knit during the Holiday season. But maybe I got a little tired of the bright red color because now at the start of this year, I, for the first time ever, felt like knitting in black.

So socks in black is the first knitting project for this year. And I have really enjoyed knitting these socks.

I don’t know why we so often choose very bright colors for knitted socks. So knitting socks in black seemed almost like I was doing something prohibited.

But anyway, it was fun and I am really happy now to have a pair of knitted socks that are quite subtle in color so that I can have them on without people noticing them that much.

Basic Knitted Socks In Black

The pattern of the socks almost looks like braids but you don’t have to use an extra needle like with regular braids so these socks are quite easy to knit.

The knitting pattern I used as inspiration is this one: https://www.garnstudio.com/pattern.php?id=6480&cid=19

As you can see, I just knitted the heel part a little differently as I wanted the “braided” pattern to cover the whole sock.

I will leave the instructions on how I knitted the heel here below:

How To Knit The Heel

Knit back and forth on needles 1 and 2 to make the back of the heel! Remember to keep knitting the “braided” pattern. When the heel flap measures around 5 cm it’s time to start decreasing.

Knit 25 sts, and knit two stitches together. Turn over the piece.

Knit 15 sts, and knit two stitches together. Turn over piece.

Continue like that until 15 sts are left in total on the 2 needles.

How To Knit The Rest Of The Sock

Pick up 10 sts on each side of the heel flap so you have 70 sts in total and start knitting the foot on the sock using all four needles. Now it is important that you follow the “braided” pattern according to the two needles on the top of the foot. So the two needles that weren’t part of making the heel decide how the “braided” pattern continues over the foot.

When the knitting covers the little toe starts decreasing as the instructions tell you in the pattern linked above.

So that was my first knitting project for this year. I am really happy with how they turned out. I am looking forward to knitting more things in black in the future now that I have started. A hat in black would be really nice.

I can see that knitting this hat: https://underbartskapad.com/how-to-knit-a-hat-with-circular-needles/ in the yarn I used for these socks would turn out really nice.

What Yarn To Use For Socks

When I was in the yarn store to buy some black yarn I asked the person working in the store what kind of yarn she recommends for socks. I have realized that most yarns that are labeled as sock yarn have nylon mixed in with the wool.

Nylon is synthetic and makes the yarn more durable. A yarn with around 75 % wool and 25 % is warm and durable. There are sock yarns that are 100 % wool, those are not as durable but the choice of yarn is of course up to you.

But at least now I understand why nylon is added to sock yarn. Nylon makes yarn more durable and it makes sense that when you knit something that you will be walking on, the yarn you use needs some extra durability. There is always something new to learn. 😉

I am really looking forward to winter and spring with lots of knitting. My next project will be using up some light green cotton yarn I have from before.

I hope you too have had a good start to 2025. And hope to see you again soon!
