Our family of five, me, my husband, and our three children are planning a trip to Colombia this summer. We live in Sweden so that means that we will have to travel far.

Traveling with three small children is a challenge, we have traveled to Colombia as a family once before when we had two kids and now we have one more. It makes me a little nervous.

I know it is going to work out well but I also know that with a little bit of planning the time on the plane will go a little bit smoother. Making traveling a little bit more smooth when you travel with children is a good idea.

We have actually taken a few longer flights before as a family, first when we had just one baby and then with our two children, and now with our three children. We have some interesting stories to tell. 😀

I don’t know if it’s the same with everyone that is traveling with kids but something with traveling with our kids when they are babies makes them need a diaper change exactly when the timing is tricky.

So, we have learned a lot through the years and I am sure that there are still many lessons to be learned. 😀

Activities For Children During The Flight

During longer flights, there are a lot of hours to be filled with activity in some form. We do enjoy the movies that the airline offers when we are taking a longer flight but it is also good to bring some kind of activities for your small ones.

At least our kids get in a better mood if they get to create something so having some simple crafts project with you can be a good idea.

Our children like coloring so we will bring some paper and pens in different colors so that they can draw something for the family at my husband’s side that we will visit. That keeps them focused on where we are going and that they soon will meet their grandparents and cousins.

Another idea is to bring some travel coloring pages with you. Here below are a few coloring pages, one with an airplane, one with tickets and a passport, and if you will travel by bus there is one for you too.

A good thing about coloring is that you don’t need many supplies for it, which is good when you are traveling.

Traveling With Kids

Traveling with kids takes more planning and you might not get to watch all the movies you would like to watch but it is also fun to see the world through their eyes.

The long lines at the airport might not be their favorite place to stand, but children do live very much in the moment. I have realized that even if traveling has its hard moments, most of the time, if our children are feeling well, also brings moments of learning and wonder.

My children have taught me to slow down and enjoy the day that we are living right now. Children most of the time don’t care about tomorrow, they want to have fun today. So it is a nice experience to see the world through their eyes and remember that today is an adventure.

Encouragement If Needed

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9

If you have a more anxious child when you are traveling, it can be good to prepare them with some encouraging words.

One cool thing to be reminded of when traveling from one place to another is that God is present both where we start and where we are going. Even if we travel for hours and hours, God is still with us when we arrive in a new place.

Traveling can really expand the view small children have of this earth that we are living on. The greatness of God’s creation is amazing.

For some children though, traveling can be a lot to take in. So if you have a child that has the tendency to feel anxious Joshua 1:9 is a good reminder of why we don’t need to be afraid.

Our heavenly Father who cares so much about us doesn’t stay behind as we travel, he is with us all the way.

We might not be in control over how the flight will go and some things can feel scary but our God will be with us and he is very strong and powerful.
