Bible Verses About Hearing God

Here are some Bible verses about hearing God.

Getting to know God and realizing that He speaks to each of us is a big part of understanding who He is and who we are in His eyes.

God is not silent. God created communication and He communicates all the time.

God’s Cares About Our Everyday Life

“You have searched me, Lord,
    and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
    you, Lord, know it completely.”

Psalms 139:1-4

In Psalm 139 David writes about how well God knows us. God knows us so well. He knows about every detail in our lives. God doesn’t only care about our Sundays, he wants to be a part of every aspect of our lives.

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

In Thessalonians chapter 5 the church of the Thessalonians were encouraged to rejoice always, pray continually, and to give thanks in all circumstances.

“God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”

1 Cor 1:9

We were created to have a relationship with our Father. Just as in any other relationship, there is two-way communication. Just as we can pray and talk with our creator at any time, God also wants to communicate with us.

What Does It Mean To Hear God’s Voice?

God speaks every day. He is with us everywhere. He is with us when we read the Bible and pray, but also when we are at university, changing diapers, or at work. We can share every moment of the day with Him. He wants to communicate with us throughout our days.

God wants to communicate with you. He cares about what you are doing and what you are going through. God is omnipresent. God will always be with you.

How then, does God speak to us?

God communicates in many different ways. We can see that God speaks in different ways in the Bible. Let’s take a look at some different ways that God communicates in his word.

Bible Verses About Hearing God

Hearing God Through An Audible Voice

“When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!”
And Moses said, “Here I am.””

Exodus 3:4

There are some examples of God using an audible voice as he communicated with people in the Bible, one of them is when Moses saw the burning bush.

Hearing God Through Dreams

“After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”

So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.”

Matthew 2:19-23

An angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph. In Matthew chapter 2, we can read about how Joseph receives a warning from God through a dream.

God Speaks Through Visions

“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple.”

Isaiah 6:1

There are also many visions described in the Bible where God reveals himself.

Hearing God Through A Still Small Voice

In the New King James Version of 1 Kings 19:9-12 we can read about a still small voice.

Hearing God is usually much more natural and not at all as dramatic as one might first think it should be. God is so great and can choose to speak to us in so many different ways.

Hearing God Through His Word/The Bible

“Your word is a lamp for my feet,
    a light on my path.”

Psalm 119:105

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path”. The Bible, the word of God is a way God shows us so much about who he is and who we were made to be.

These are just a few examples of God speaking in the Bible.

God Is Very Communicative

All throughout the Bible we can read about God speaking. Already in Genesis chapters 1 and 2, we can read that God created the earth through speaking.

As we continue reading we can see how God speaks through dreams, visions, an audible voice, he sends angels, makes bushes light up in fire, and so on. The ways that God speaks are limitless.

So hearing the voice of God is a lot about getting to know him so that we can know when it is him that is speaking.

How To Recognize God’s Voice

“When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.””

John 10:4-5
"...and his sheep follow him because they know his voice."
John 10:4

In scripture, we can read about Jesus saying that He is the good shepherd.

In John chapter 10 verse 4 it says that his sheep follow him because they know his voice. When we get to know God and his word, when we start learning His character we get to know his voice too.

An essential part of hearing the voice of God is knowing Him. When we get to know God and hear Him speak we start recognizing His voice.

Just as sheep only answer to the call of their shepherd we get to only follow Jesus.

God Speaks Through His Word

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17

As said earlier, God speaks through his word. As 1 Timothy verse 16 says: “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”

Through reading the word of God we get to know him. We get to know his will and his character. Through reading his word we learn to discern his voice.

Enjoy The Process

Here is a free printable with some Bible verses about hearing God. Feel free to download it and write down notes on what God is highlighting in the verses right now.

Learning how to discern God’s voice takes practice. Take time in the morning and ask God for a word for the day and wait for an answer. Take time to be before God. He wants to talk to us. He wants to talk to you.

And when he speaks we need to listen. I often have to remind myself to listen. We can hear a lot without it leading to any change, but when we choose to listen and live according to what God says, change happens!

We hope that these Bible verses about hearing God was an encouragement to you.
