Knitting pattern – Baby Socks

Here is a knitting pattern on how to knit baby socks.

These Baby Socks are made with yarn that is suitable for needles size 3,5. The yarn I used was 100% soft wool but you can choose the material you prefer!

These socks can fit babies of different ages as they are really stretchy. All you need to think of is to make the leg and foot of the sock of a suitable length.

Cast on 36 sts and divide on four double pointes needles(size 3,5).

Start knitting rib pattern(2K, 2P). Knit that same rib pattern for 3 rows and shift the ribbed pattern to the side by one stitch like the pattern shows here down below:

KKPPKKPP – 3 rows

PKKPPKKP – 3 rows

PPKKPPKK – 3 rows

And so on…

Continue knitting the spiral pattern until the leg part of the sock is a length you are happy with. I knitted these socks for a 6 month old baby and chose a length of 7 cm(2,8 inches) but this can be varied depending on how big the baby’s foot is.

Then it’s time to start knitting the heel!

How to knit the heel

Knit back and forth on needle 1 and 2 to make the back of the heel! Remember to keep knitting the spiral pattern! When the heel flap measures 2,5 cm(1 inch) it’s time to start decreasing!

Knit/purl(still following the spiral pattern) 12 sts, slip the next stitch as if to knit(or purl, depending on the spiral pattern), knit(or purl) 1 stitch, pass the slipped stitch over the stitch worked, turn over piece.

Knit/purl 7 sts, slip the next stitch as if to knit(or purl, depending on the spiral pattern), knit(or purl) 1 stitch, pass the slipped stitch over the stitch worked, turn over piece.

Continue like that until 8 sts are left in total on the 2 needles.

How to knit the rest of the sock

Pick up 5 sts on each side of the heel flap so that both needles have 9 sts and start knitting the foot on the sock using all four needles. Now it is important that you follow the spiral pattern on the two needles on the top of the foot! So the two needles that havn’t been a part of making the heel decide how the spiral pattern continue over the foot!

Continue knitting until the sock reach over the little toe. Start decreasing the amount of sts by one on every needle when you knit.

Knit the last two sts together through the front loop on the 1st(counted from under the foot) and 3rd needle and the first two sts together through the back loop on the 2nd and 4th needle. Continue like that until 2 sts remain on each needle. Cut the yarn and pull it through the stitches.

Done! 🙂

If something in the pattern is confusing don’t hesitate to comment and ask!

Be blessed! 🙂
