These words were spoken to Joshua at a time when He was the new leader of Israel. He was called to lead a huge amount of people into the promised land.

I can imagine that the task seemed to be very big and challenging.

Joshua chose to keep focusing on God’s promises and was obedient to what God called him to.

Strong And Courageous Because Of Him

This last fall, our middle child was going back to preschool without his older sister. The year before he had his sister with him every morning but now she would start a new school.

Our middle child has always liked slow mornings and he often would prefer to stay home a little longer when it is time to get out the door. Going back to preschool after summer was challenging for him.

As we were preparing for the first day we read Joshua 1:9 together. We talked about how we can be strong and courageous when God is with us because he is so big and strong. Even when we feel unsure, God is still strong.

So when we have God by our side, we can be strong because of who he is, not because we feel strong.

We can be strong and courageous because of who our God is.

A few days later as our son was preparing for preschool in the morning I heard him saying to himself, I am strong, I am courageous. 🙂 It was so cool to hear him saying those words to himself.

He can be strong and courageous because of who God is.

Dependency On God

I like to think about the hot air balloons as a way to teach children about the dependency we have on God.

I like to think that the hot air in the balloons that is needed for the hot air balloon to fly is God’s presence in our lives.

Just as Joshua wouldn’t have been able to enter the promised land without God, we are not able to do great things with God without fully depending on him.

Sometimes we need that reminder, that it is because of God’s greatness that we can be strong and courageous. We are not meant to live our lives in our own strength.

God wants us to lean on him. We get to seek him and let him lead us.

Knowing God And Following Him

When we get to know God and really start trusting him for who he is it is easy to let him lead.

In the Bible we can read about who God is, that he is the creator of the universe, and that he is almighty. God wants to have a close relationship with us and lead us.

Sometimes it is easy to make plans and then ask God to bless them but I have now understood that we get to seek him first and then follow his lead.

When we take time to seek God and let him show us who he is and why he created us we get to live life closely with him. He wants to be with us in every part of our lives.
